Andrew:

I look forward to seeing you there in Seattle. I'll be there with one of my artists, Randy "Rantz" Kintz.

And, sorry, but I have no Bronze Age art available. The artists I work with, were not working in the industry at that time. The closest I get is some very late 80's pieces.

James:

Thanks for stopping by Comics Bronze Age. I don’t think I ran across your table at the show; the Artist Alley area was swamped when I tried to make my way through. I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for you at the upcoming Seattle show. (You don’t happen to have any Bronze Age original art in your offerings, do you?)

By the way, that’s a great thing you do passing out free comics. My Dad is a model railroader, and he does the same thing with starter train sets at the shows he does.

Cheers,
Andrew

Mark:

The person who handed out the free comics to kids (and gave your daughter that copy of Alf #10) was me. I'm not an artist, though (I wish I had the skills to be one), but an artist's rep. I sell the original artwork for the artists I work for (usually at shows they are unable to make). Of course, this is a mistake I have become use to, so no harm no foul.

Weeks before the show I had been planning to hand out free comics to the kids I saw at the show (gave away almost 50 comics at the Spokane show, too). I feel that if we want to have comics around in another 25 years, we need to help the next generation develop a love of this stuff like we have. So, I do my part in every way I can. I honestly care about this industry and the people who create this stuff. It's one of the reasons I wanted to be an artist's rep. Glad I was able to give your little girl a positive memory of the show.

As for the show itself, I agree it was nice, but small. And I can say that it was, for me, pretty much a total financial bust. Something I noted was all the folks who mentioned this being their first time at a comicon. That never bodes well for original art sellers like me. Too many lookee-loos and not enough serious buyers. Also, the tables were smaller than i thought they'd be and the space behind them was cramped for those of us in artist's alley, because we all had stuff we needed to keep behind the tables.

I don't want to bag on the show too much, because it was a good time and I enjoyed handing out the comics to the kids (my hilight of the day, too, Mark) and talking with people about original comic art. But from a businessman's perspective, it just wasn't that good to me (or my artists). And things like that can be the kiss of death to smaller shows like this, as losing money on events isn't something those looking to sell will be willing to commit to, year after year. I'll probably go next year and see if it is any better. If it isn't, I'll have to seriously rethink going after that.

Oh, and Mark, I'm going to be at the Seattle ComiCard show mentioned in this report. So, if you and your daughter will be in the area, please drop by my table there. I'll be giving out free comics again, too.

Mark:

Thanks for stopping by. The nice thing about the Spokane Comicon is it is the kind of show you can take your kids to. I flew solo to this one, and really regretted not taking my 10-year-old daughter along. She would have loved all the costumes (and the food!) Next year, we plan to make it a family outing.

Cheers,
Andrew

I totally agree with your assessment. Nice show but not enough comics or dealers and not a big enough room. The highlight was my 5-year old daughter getting a copy of Alf # 10 from one of the artists. Thank you, whoever you were!!!!
