THE INHUMANS #9
(Cover by Keith Pollard and Aubrey Bradford)
Published and © by Marvel, Feb. 1977
“The Inhumans!”
Synopsis: In this reprint tale, a devious ploy by Maximus the Mad drives the Inhumans into battle with the Fantastic Four.
Writer: Jack Kirby
Penciler: Kirby
Inker: Chic Stone
Review: Talk about plotus interruptus. Last issue’s cliffhanger suggested battle with the Kree loomed, and this issue’s cover confirms it. Unfortunately, a reprint tale from Amazing Adventures had to be swapped in at the last minute. As far as reprints go, you really can’t go wrong with Jack Kirby. Few artists capture the Inhumans with the power and imagination of their co-creator, and Kirby’s art here is top shelf. But the King’s scripting is always a bit clunky, and words like “chick” and “groovy” seem really out of place following regular writer Doug Moench’s work on this series.
Grade: B
Cool factor: Hey, look, it’s a Jack Kirby reprint!
Not-so-cool factor: Hey, look, it’s a Jack Kirby reprint!
Notable: Reprints the Inhumans stories from 1970’s Amazing Adventures #1-2.
Character quotable: “They’re groovy! I love them all!” — Crystal, giving a shout out to her crazy cousins
